What Is Acne Excoriée
Acne excoriée or acne excorie basically means “picked or scratched pimples”
The term acne excorieé was coined in France as “acne excoriée des jeunes filles” due to condition first being seen in young women.
It is a condition that affects those with acne and those with very little or none.
The sufferer typically compulsively picks and scratches at their lesions until they become infected and scarred which then leads to more picking.
Even if the acne heals or disappears, the sufferers continue to pick and scratch.
In patients without acne, it can be a subconscious habit or compulsion associated with anxiety, depression and psychological illnesses.
Without treatment it can become chronic and complications can set in including severe scarring on the face, neck, back and trunk of the body.
Patients with existing acne sometimes believe that picking gets rid of the spots or is helpful so will continue to pick, scratch and squeeze pimples, comedones and lesions despite the fact that it is worsening the problem and leads to permanent scarring
Who Suffers From Acne Excoriée
Acne excoriée is relatively uncommon these days thanks to the advances in acne treatments but it still does occur.
Even though it usually affects young girls and teenagers, it often occurs in women with late-onset acne and can affect men.
Treatments For Acne Excoriée
Any active spots can be treated with by topical therapies; antibiotic creams, retinoids, oral medications; antibiotics, some contraceptive pills designed for this purpose and occasionally, in very severe cases of acne, accutane may be prescribed.
Treatments to help with scarring include facial peels and laser skin resurfacing.
Patients without acne will require psychological therapy such as hypnotherapy and habit reversal therapy possibly in conjunction with a SSRI (serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) medication such as clomipramine, doxepin or pimozide.
